WEBSITE PLANNING
Plan a Website Launch Rollback Before You Need It
Define how to restore the last working version if a launch breaks a critical customer path.
Choose concrete failure triggers
Identify problems serious enough to pause or reverse the launch, such as the site becoming unavailable or the agreed inquiry path failing. Separate those from minor copy changes. Decide who is authorized to make the rollback decision and how they can be reached during the launch window.
Know what restoration covers
Ask the developer which previous version can be restored and whether data, domain settings or external services require separate steps. A code rollback may not reverse every configuration change. Keep the recovery instructions and necessary access in a secure project record.
Confirm the recovery evidence
Record how the team would check the restored homepage and critical customer paths. Do not declare recovery complete solely because a deployment tool reports success. After a rollback, preserve the failure evidence and plan the correction before trying again. A practical rollback plan is a defined procedure with an owner, not simply a promise that someone can fix problems later.
Apply this to your business
