WEBSITE PLANNING

Website Redesign SEO Checklist: Keep Pages and Inquiries Working

Plan a small-business website redesign with a URL worksheet, content decisions, launch checks and a clear owner for forms, domains and follow-up.

Start with what customers already use

Before choosing a new layout, list the pages people use to understand your services or contact you. Include links from your Business Profile, social profiles, email signatures and printed materials. A redesign can look complete while an old estimate link stops working. The purpose of this checklist is to make those handoffs visible before launch. It does not guarantee that search positions will remain unchanged.

Create a page-by-page handover worksheet

Use one row per existing page and record: old address; customer task; current search or inquiry evidence; proposed action; destination address; person responsible; and launch-check result. Actions can be keep, improve, merge or retire. Record unavailable analytics as missing rather than assuming a page has no value. Include useful older pages even if they are not linked in your current menu.

Decide which content earns a place

A service page may need clearer inclusions, coverage or contact instructions instead of a new address. Keep useful explanations and genuine project examples where they still describe the business. Merge overlapping pages only when the destination fully answers the same customer need. Do not make city-name copies to increase the page count. Distinct services and customer questions should determine the structure. Compare our one-page and multi-page planning guide before fixing the scope.

Map changed addresses deliberately

If an address must change, map it to the closest relevant replacement and use an appropriate permanent redirect. Avoid sending every removed service page to the homepage. Update internal links, preferred page addresses and the sitemap together. Google’s site-move documentation explains URL mapping, redirects and monitoring; Google also notes that rankings can fluctuate while changes are processed.

Work through a concrete example

Suppose a cleaning business has an old /move-out page used in its social profile. The redesigned site calls the service /move-out-cleaning. Its worksheet should name the replacement, assign the redirect, update the social link and check the new page’s inquiry button. If move-out cleaning is no longer offered, the owner should decide how to explain that rather than implying it is still available. This is an illustrative workflow, not a North Front Digital client result.

Give contact routes their own acceptance checks

List the phone number, receiving email address, quote form and any booking provider. Confirm who receives each inquiry and who follows up. Agree on clearly labeled end-to-end tests before launch and distinguish a form acceptance from actual inbox delivery. Preserve measurement for real inquiries while excluding test activity where possible. Our call and quote-request tracking worksheet separates contact intent from accepted requests and customer outcomes.

Set ownership and a recovery plan

Before switching the live site, confirm who controls the domain, hosting, website files and relevant business accounts. Record how the previous working version can be restored and who can make that decision. Keep recovery details in a secure project record, not on a public page. Agree on a launch window and a reachable contact if a critical page or inquiry path fails. Do not send passwords through a general project inquiry form.

Review the launch and the reporting separately

Check that intended public pages load, links reach the right destinations and accidental preview restrictions have been removed. Inspect important URLs in Search Console and monitor crawl or indexing changes over time. Then compare equivalent reporting periods, allowing for lag. A successful deployment is not proof that Google has reprocessed the site. Use the search-discovery checklist if an important page is missing.

Ask for a scoped redesign review

North Front Digital can discuss your existing site, the customer actions that matter and the pages you need to preserve. Start with our website redesign service overview, then request a quote with your current website address, the main problem and your desired timing. We confirm deliverables, access responsibilities and price in writing before work begins.
