WEBSITE PLANNING
How to Track Website Calls and Quote Requests
Separate contact clicks, accepted forms and real customers. Build a simple inquiry measurement plan for a small service-business website.
Give each number a clear meaning
Search impressions tell you that a result appeared; visits tell you that someone reached your site. Neither tells you that a customer contacted you. A phone-link click is an attempt to open a dialer, and an email-link click may only open a draft. Keep those intent signals separate from received inquiries, confirmed appointments and sales.
Define the accepted-request step
For an inquiry form, count success only after the receiver confirms acceptance. Do not count a button press, a validation error or a thank-you page refresh as a new lead. Google lists generate_lead as a recommended GA4 event for a submitted form or information request. Your implementation still needs a precise rule for when it fires.
Use this measurement worksheet
For each contact route, write down five fields: customer action, evidence of acceptance, receiving inbox or system, person responsible for follow-up, and how the final outcome is recorded. For a website form, the evidence might be a unique accepted-request reference that appears in the business inbox. For calls, a dialer click remains an intent measure until your business records an actual conversation.
Check the customer path separately from analytics
Open the contact page on a phone and check that the service, coverage and next step are clear. Confirm that the phone and email destinations are correct. When you choose to run an end-to-end test, label it clearly, check the receiving inbox and exclude it from customer reporting. A form success message alone is not proof of inbox delivery. We plan form behavior and responsibilities within the agreed website scope.
Keep the report small and useful
Review organic visits, contact intent, accepted requests and owner-confirmed outcomes as separate totals for the same dates. Record missing data as missing, rather than zero. Account for reporting delays, consent choices, staff visits and duplicate requests. With only a few visits, an extra click can produce a large percentage change; retain the actual counts alongside any percentage.
Choose the next fix from the evidence
If a service page receives visits but no contact attempts, check whether it answers the questions needed to make an inquiry. If visitors attempt contact but requests do not arrive, investigate delivery before buying more traffic. If requests arrive but are poor fits, clarify service scope and coverage. These are hypotheses to check against real inquiries, not automatic explanations for every low total.
Agree on privacy and follow-up
Keep names, email addresses, phone numbers and message contents out of analytics event labels and URLs. Use your normal business inbox or approved customer system for follow-up, with an appropriate retention process. Ask for a scoped measurement review if you need help connecting the steps. If the main issue is search discovery, start with our Google indexing checklist.
