WEBSITE PLANNING

Why Google Shows a Different Page Title

Compare your page title, heading and search result before changing a title that Google has rewritten.

Record the exact mismatch

A different search title does not automatically mean the website is broken. Save the searched phrase, landing-page address, device, date and displayed title. Then record the title currently delivered by the website and its main visible heading. This gives the reviewer a specific discrepancy to explain instead of a request to make every search result match a screenshot. Keep separate examples when different searches show different wording.

Check the sources of the title

Google creates title links automatically and can consider the title element, visible heading, prominent text and links referring to the page. Its guidance recommends concise, descriptive titles and warns against repeated boilerplate. A page called Services in the browser but Emergency Furnace Repair in its heading sends less consistent information than one whose main labels describe the same subject. The example illustrates an inconsistency; it does not imply North Front Digital offers furnace repair.

Create a correction worksheet

Use columns for URL, intended customer question, current title, main heading, observed result, factual mismatch and proposed correction. Prioritize an obsolete service name, wrong year or unsupported location before cosmetic differences. If the result accurately describes the page, record no correction needed. Do not insert a list of neighboring cities into every title. The title should distinguish this page from other pages on the same site.

Make one attributable change

Keep a dated copy of the old title, the approved replacement and the reason. Check that the change appears on the public URL and that the visible content still supports it. Google needs to recrawl and reprocess changes, so an unchanged result immediately after publication is not proof of failure. Review comparable query and page data later rather than revising the title every morning. A title correction cannot guarantee higher positions or more clicks.

Prepare the review

Send your URL and one example of the unexpected title through the quote form. Include the correct business or service name and the result you expected. Never send account passwords in the form. Read Google’s title-link guidance for the underlying behavior.
