Explain a Position Change With Query Mix
Use a worked hypothetical example to separate ranking movement from changes in the searches showing your site.
Avoid treating one average as the whole story
Search Console average position describes the topmost result for the relevant grouping. A sitewide number combines different searches, pages and audiences. If that mixture changes, the overall average can change even when an established query performs similarly. Start with the query and page breakdown before calling a movement a ranking loss.
Work through a hypothetical expansion
Suppose a small site previously had 100 impressions at position 5. In a later period that group remains at position 5, while a new group receives 100 impressions at position 45. In this simplified, equally weighted example, the combined average becomes 25. The worse-looking average accompanies additional visibility; it does not prove the original group fell. These numbers illustrate the arithmetic and are not a client result.
Build three comparison groups
Create rows for queries present in both periods, newly reported queries and queries no longer reported. Compare the established group separately, then examine which pages account for new visibility. Keep device and country filters consistent. Do not assume an absent query row proves it received zero searches or impressions; report availability and privacy limitations can affect what is shown.
Choose the right response
An established commercial page losing visibility deserves a different investigation from a new guide appearing for broader terms. Record which situation the evidence supports. Pair positions with impressions and clicks, and avoid promising that every new query will convert. Keep the change log close to the report so genuine technical regressions are not lost in aggregate arithmetic.
