Prepare Product Variants for an Online Store
Create a variant worksheet that matches each product option to its own identifier, image, price, availability and selected landing-page state.
Identify what makes the options different
A product family can have options such as size, color or material. Write down which differences create a separately purchasable item and which are simply descriptive. Each sellable variant needs an unambiguous record. Avoid placing a single stock value or photo on the whole family when the choices actually differ. This worksheet extends a catalog brief by focusing on the relationship between one parent product and its options.
A fictional two-variant worksheet
Imagine a sample notebook offered in blue and green. The worksheet contains parent group NOTE-A; variant NOTE-A-BLUE; color blue; its own image; and a price and availability confirmed by the seller. A second row contains NOTE-A-GREEN and its corresponding values. These are fictional records, not inventory for sale. Leave unconfirmed price or stock fields marked for review instead of inventing plausible values to complete the sheet.
Match links to the selected option
Open each proposed variant link and check whether the intended option is selected. The visible name, image and availability should describe that selection. Google documents ProductGroup and product-variant structured data, including how variants are grouped and linked. Structured data is a representation of the store’s real information; it does not create inventory or guarantee a search appearance.
Use a release checklist
Review identifier uniqueness, option spelling, image association, price, availability, URL behavior and an unsupported combination. Record who changes each field when stock or product details change. Ask a reviewer to switch options and confirm the content follows the selection rather than retaining the previous variant’s details. Bring the verified worksheet and actual product assets to a storefront planning conversation.
