WEBSITE PLANNING

Plan Product Photos That Answer Purchase Questions

Create a product-photo shot list tied to buyer questions, with accurate variant matching and documented image rights.

Assign a question to every image

A useful photo brief starts with what a shopper needs to understand: overall shape, scale, texture, fastening, included components or the difference between options. Write the question beside the proposed shot. This makes the brief more specific than asking for several attractive pictures. Separate documentary product images from decorative lifestyle scenes so a scene does not imply that an accessory is included.

A fictional shot list

For a sample travel pouch, plan a front view to show the shape, an open view to show the interior, a close-up of the closure and a clearly labeled scale reference. If two colors are sold, each record should identify which variant appears. This is an illustrative photography exercise, not a product offered by North Front Digital. The merchant should verify all visible details against the actual item.

Choose the main image deliberately

Google Merchant Center distinguishes the main product image from additional images. Its image-link guidance explains that relationship. Select a clear, accurate main image and use additional views to answer other questions. Do not replace the real variant with a loosely similar image or edit a product feature into the photograph merely because the desired asset is missing.

Build a reviewable asset handoff

For each file, record product identifier, variant, angle, intended use, photographer or rights holder, permission status and a plain description for accessibility review. Include a checklist for color accuracy, cropped details, unrelated branding and uncertain rights. A reviewer should compare the image with the product record before publication. Bring the shot list and available licensed assets to a storefront content discussion; missing photos can then become explicit tasks instead of misleading placeholders.
