WEBSITE PLANNING
Find What Makes a Website Jump While Loading
Capture unexpected movement, identify its trigger and give developers a reproducible layout-shift report.
Describe the movement precisely
A page that jumps while someone reaches for a contact button can be frustrating even when it loads quickly. Record which element moves, what appeared immediately before the movement and whether it happens on every visit. Capture the viewport size and whether a banner, image, font or embedded tool was involved. A short screen recording can communicate the sequence better than a still screenshot.
Use the metric as evidence
Cumulative Layout Shift measures unexpected layout movement during the page lifecycle. Google’s guidance discusses common causes including images without reserved space, dynamically inserted content and font changes. The metric helps locate a class of problems; it does not tell you which business content to remove. Investigate the visible behavior alongside the measured result.
Test one suspected cause at a time
If an image pushes a heading down, ask whether its space was reserved before download. If a notice appears above the page, consider whether the design can allocate its space or present it without displacing the current task. If text changes shape after a font loads, capture that separately. Avoid attributing every jump to large image file sizes; the timing and layout reservation are different questions.
Write the acceptance condition
A useful ticket might say that the quote button must remain stable while the specified image finishes loading at the recorded phone width. Include reproduction steps, the affected template, before evidence and the expected behavior. Retest navigation and reading order after changes. A fix that hides necessary instructions or makes a banner impossible to dismiss has traded one problem for another.
Review beyond initial load
Scroll through the page and open the relevant interface controls; a quick initial screenshot can miss later movement. Compare the same interaction before and after the change and keep the report with the release record. Field metrics may take time to reflect new visits.
