WEBSITE PLANNING

Review Internal Links That Help Customers Choose

Map links by the questions readers ask next, using descriptive wording and verified destinations.

Start from the reader’s next question

Choose one useful page and read it as a prospective customer. After each section, note the natural next question. A pricing explanation may raise questions about inclusions; a portfolio story may raise questions about the process; a service area page may lead to an inquiry. Add a link when a real destination answers that next question. A long block of unrelated links at the bottom does not replace a coherent reading path.

Make the destination predictable

Google recommends descriptive, reasonably concise anchor text and crawlable links. Ordinary HTML links with an href let readers follow a destination and support discovery. Compare Learn more with Compare website package inclusions. The latter tells the reader what to expect. Repeating the same exact commercial phrase in every paragraph makes the writing harder to use and rarely helps explain the relationship between pages.

Create a link map

For each proposed link record the source URL, paragraph context, destination URL, anchor wording and customer question answered. Verify that the destination remains public and covers the promised information. Prefer the current direct destination over a known obsolete address that redirects. For a hypothetical project guide, a link from the discussion of maintenance responsibilities to a maintenance scope page is more useful than a random list of neighboring towns.

Check the path in both directions

A new guide needs an appropriate route from an existing hub or related page, while the guide itself should connect to the next useful decision. Avoid assuming sitemap membership gives readers a way to find the content. Review on a phone and with a keyboard. Distinguish text links from buttons that perform an action, and check that important navigation is not only revealed by hovering a mouse.

Record what changed

Save the source and destination pairs in the change log and revisit them when services or URLs change. You can review discovery and engagement later, but one internal link is not a ranking guarantee. A website design review can include navigation planning. Google’s link best practices explain the technical foundation.
