WEBSITE PLANNING
Investigate Slow Button Responses With INP
Turn slow button or menu feedback into a reproducible investigation with clear acceptance criteria.
Choose the interaction that feels slow
Record the action, such as opening a menu or selecting a form option, and what visual feedback should follow. Note whether the delay occurs only after a long session or on the first interaction. A complaint that the website is slow is easier to act on when attached to a repeatable control and sequence.
Separate feedback from completion
A form can show that it is processing before a remote service finishes responding. Measure the delay before the interface reacts separately from the total business operation. Interaction to Next Paint concerns responsiveness to qualifying interactions; it is not a measurement of whether an email arrived or a reservation was accepted. Google’s guidance explains investigating the work surrounding an interaction.
Create a repair brief
Include a recording, browser and device, starting state, steps and expected feedback. Ask for the suspected blocking work and a comparable retest. Verify that faster feedback does not falsely announce success before the operation succeeds. For a quote form, an immediate processing state and a later accurate acceptance message serve different purposes. Keep both in the acceptance criteria.
