WEBSITE PLANNING

Keep Owner Visits From Distorting Website Reports

Plan and validate an internal-traffic filter before permanently excluding incoming analytics data.

Inventory the people and connections

List owners, staff and contractors who regularly inspect the site, along with the networks they use when known. Keep sensitive network details in a restricted configuration record, not a public report. An office connection, a home connection and mobile data may behave differently. Do not assume a rule covering one location identifies every staff visit.

Use testing before activation

GA4 offers testing, active and inactive filter states. Testing lets you inspect matching data before an active filter makes permanent changes to incoming data. Write down the intended rule, owner and review date. Avoid activating a broad exclusion simply because the first preview appears to match your own visit.

Use a controlled example

For a hypothetical office team, arrange a permitted non-converting page visit from the known office network and compare it with a separate expected external session. Review whether the intended traffic is marked. Do not submit inquiry forms, place orders or create fake conversions just to check the filter. Record the test time and allow for processing before deciding the rule failed.

Document the blind spots

A shared network may include people who are not staff; a changing address may stop matching the intended rule. Record those limitations and revisit the configuration when working arrangements change. Keep earlier reports annotated because a new filter does not make historical owner visits disappear. Only activate once the reviewer understands what will be excluded and has checked that the scope matches the business decision.
